Protests Erupt in Sokoto After Cleric Stabbed During Prayers

On Friday, a prominent Islamic cleric, Sheikh Musa Ayyuba Lukuwa, was stabbed in Sokoto at the conclusion of Jumu’at prayers, resulting in one death and prompting protests across the city. The Sokoto State Police Command, represented by DSP Rufa’i Ahmad, confirmed that Lukuwa was attacked in the stomach and is currently receiving treatment at Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital.

The assailant was killed by an angry mob at the scene. The police reported no arrests but assured that the situation was under control.

The stabbing is linked to rising religious tensions, as Lukuwa had been accused of making blasphemous remarks against Prophet Muhammed, which incited anger among Muslims and led to demonstrations. Dahiru Maibarewa had previously threatened Lukuwa over these remarks.

Sheikh Abubakar Yagawal condemned Lukuwa’s comments, stating they could instigate violence. The police are working to restore normalcy as investigations continue.
