Lagos Police Uncover N1 Billion Vehicle Fraud Syndicate

The Lagos State Police Command has uncovered a vehicle fraud syndicate that allegedly defrauded car dealers of N1 billion. The investigation, led by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at Panti, was initiated following multiple complaints from vehicle dealers.

Key suspects identified include Fatai Balogun, known as Eleku, and Segun Otunba. The first case involved Muritala Bashiru, who allegedly obtained vehicles from dealers under false pretenses.

During interrogation, Muritala implicated Balogun, who admitted to participating in the transactions. The investigation revealed that Balogun fraudulently acquired 12 exotic vehicles from various dealers, using a vehicle tracking platform that aided in their recovery.

The second case involved Balogun deceiving three victims into acquiring seven vehicles worth approximately N700 million, claiming they were meant for a prominent politician in Abuja. The third case linked Balogun and Bashiru to the acquisition of 10 Toyota Hiace buses valued at N320 million.

So far, the police have recovered several vehicles, including a 2010 Toyota RAV4 and a 2017 Toyota Highlander SUV.
