Yam Prices Surge in Enugu Markets Amid Insecurity

A market survey conducted in Enugu State revealed a steady increase in yam prices. Medium-sized tubers of old yam are currently sold for ₦3,000 to ₦5,000, up from ₦2,000 to ₦3,500, while large tubers range from ₦6,000 to ₦10,000, compared to ₦5,000 to ₦7,000 previously.

Water yam is now priced between ₦2,000 and ₦6,000, depending on size, compared to ₦1,000 to ₦4,000 earlier. Jude Onunz, a trader at the main market, noted that the high prices are attributed to increased transportation costs and seasonal supply issues.

Additionally, insecurity has made it difficult for farmers to access their farms, leading to reduced availability of yams in the Enugu metropolitan area. This situation has raised concerns among consumers regarding the affordability of this staple food.
