Protesters Demand Rejection of Tinubu's Ambassador Nominee

On Tuesday, June 24, 2023, protesters from the Coalition of Civil Society Organizations stormed the Senate, demanding the rejection of Abayomi Fasina's nomination by President Bola Tinubu as a non-career ambassador to the High Commission. The coalition, led by Amirah Adeyemo, raised concerns over allegations of sexual misconduct against Fasina, who is a professor of soil science and the outgoing Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Oye-Ekiti.

Adeyemo stated that the protest was not driven by personal grievances but was focused on Nigeria's international reputation. She called on the Senate to refrain from allowing anyone with serious allegations of sexual misconduct to represent Nigeria abroad.

The coalition emphasized that they were not asking the Senate to determine Fasina's guilt but to wait for the legal process to conclude. They urged the Senate to listen to the concerns of Nigerians and not to allow anyone with grave allegations to tarnish the country's integrity.
