McInnes Backs Fernandez for Bigger Role at Rangers

Derek McInnes, the manager of Rangers, has expressed his support for Nigerian defender Emmanuel Fernandez to take on a larger role in the 2026-27 season after a commendable debut campaign. Fernandez joined Rangers from Petersburg last summer and made a notable impact, scoring six goals in 33 appearances across all competitions.

Despite Rangers ultimately falling short in the Scottish Premiership title race, McInnes acknowledged the pressure Fernandez faces as a young player, especially alongside fellow young signing Youssef Chermiti, who came with a significant transfer fee. McInnes emphasized that every player joining the Glasgow club is expected to compete for trophies and that younger players require time to develop.

He noted that both Fernandez and Chermiti showed glimpses of quality last season and are expected to produce consistent performances moving forward.
