Telecom Leaders Discuss AI and 5G at MWC 2026

The 2026 Mobile World Congress (MWC) held in Barcelona attracted nearly 105,000 attendees from 207 countries, marking the event's 20th anniversary. Key discussions led by GSMA Director General Vivek Badrinath focused on the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) within telecom networks and the expansion of 5G technology.

The event highlighted the increasing risks posed by cybercriminals exploiting new digital services, stressing the importance of regulatory cooperation among telecom operators to develop consistent rules for AI deployment and data protection. MWC26 featured approximately 2,900 exhibitors and 1,700 speakers, with a significant representation of women among the speakers.

The event also included a ministerial program with 188 government delegates, including 54 ministers. John Hoffman, Chief Executive Officer of GSMA Ltd, emphasized the collaboration between industry partners to address technological challenges.

Upcoming GSMA events include MWC Kigali in June, MWC Shanghai later in the month, and MWC Doha scheduled for November.
