Oluremi Tinubu Urges Governors to Establish Food Banks

On Tuesday, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady of Nigeria, called on South-West governors to take ownership of the National Community Food Bank Programme during its zonal launch in Abeokuta, Ogun State. She inaugurated three community food banks in Sagamu, Yewa North, and Abeokuta South.

The initiative aims to address food insecurity and malnutrition, particularly among vulnerable groups such as children under six, pregnant women, and lactating mothers. Mrs. Tinubu emphasized that while the Federal Government initiated the programme, its success relies on state governments' commitment.

She urged governors to collaborate with the National Primary Health Care Development Agency to integrate food banks into the primary healthcare system. The programme, launched in Abuja in April 2026, is part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda and covers Ekiti, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, and Oyo states.

She clarified that food banks are distinct from food hubs, focusing on providing free assistance to disadvantaged individuals.
