Attah Advocates Local Refining Over Crude Exports in Nigeria

Toni Attah, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Renaissance Africa Energy, expressed concerns regarding Nigeria's reliance on crude oil exports during an online lecture on Thursday. He emphasized that exporting crude oil while importing refined petroleum products contradicts Nigeria's local content goals and limits value creation within the country.

Attah criticized the traditional model adopted by international oil companies, which he believes undermines local content policies and fails to build domestic refining capacity. He highlighted the importance of local refining initiatives, citing the Dangote refinery as a transformative project that could enhance Nigeria's energy sector.

Attah noted the need for a balanced energy mix, incorporating renewable energy sources to meet the growing energy demands of Nigeria's projected population increase from 200 million to 400 million by 2050. He urged investors to prioritize clarity in business models and stressed the importance of developing local financing capacities to mitigate vulnerabilities during global economic shocks.
