Dasuki Advocates for One-Day 2027 General Election

Rep Abdussamad Dasuki, the Deputy Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct the 2027 general election in one day instead of a staggered arrangement. He expressed concerns regarding Section 63 (2) of the Electoral Act, which he warned could jeopardize the election's integrity by allowing unmarked ballot papers to be counted under certain conditions.

Dasuki made these remarks while receiving youths from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) who congratulated him on his new role. He argued that a single-day election would mitigate economic losses linked to staggered elections, reduce financial burdens on the government, and simplify logistics for voters and election officials.

He proposed that the elections be held in January or February 2027, involving five ballot papers for various elections. Dasuki noted that the existence of eight off-cycle governorship elections would make a single-day election more feasible, as it would reduce the number of ballot papers to four in those states.
