Yobe Water Samples Reveal Heavy Metals Linked to Chronic Kidney Disease

A recent report by researchers in Yobe State, led by Prof. Mahmoud Maina, revealed the presence of heavy metals in water samples from Gashua town, potentially triggering chronic kidney disease (CKD).

The study focused on areas along the Yobe River, particularly Gashua and Jakusko communities, which have been severely impacted by a decade-old burden of renal failure. The preliminary findings suggest a correlation between heavy metal exposure and CKD, with known risk factors like diabetes and hypertension also contributing to the disease.

The research involved a multidisciplinary team of scientists from various countries and was sponsored by the state government. Additionally, the report emphasized the need for preventive measures and public health interventions to address the growing health crisis in the region.
