Nigerian Surgeons Achieve Milestone in Jaw Surgery

A milestone operation was successfully executed by a multidisciplinary team of surgeons at Yobe State Specialist Hospital, where Dr. Muhammad Ayuba Fusami led the complex six-hour lower jaw reconstructive surgery on Sheriff, a 40-year-old mother from Ummarari Matti Community in Bursari Local Government Area.

Sheriff had suffered from mandibular ameloblastoma, a rare and aggressive tumor that caused severe facial distortion and impaired her ability to breathe, speak, and swallow. The procedure involved segment mandibulectomy and the use of a bone graft harvested from her iliac crest to reconstruct her jaw, significantly reducing the risk of implant rejection.

The operation is noted as a critical turning point in public healthcare delivery and showcases the surgical capacity within the region, reducing reliance on distant metropolitan centers for complex medical interventions. The leadership of Yobe State Specialist Hospital credited the success to sustained infrastructural upgrades and state funding directed towards secondary and tertiary health sectors.
