Retired Comptrollers Sue Interior Minister Over Benefits

Retired comptrollers have initiated a lawsuit against the Interior Minister and six other government officials at the National Industrial Court of Nigeria in Abuja, seeking redress for unpaid retirement entitlements. The suit, filed by lawyer Maroof Giwa, alleges that the defendants failed to comply with a pre-action notice regarding the payment of benefits due upon retirement.

The claimants, led by Abalaka Betti Ajuma, assert that they are entitled to benefits as stipulated in the 2015 gazette, which includes an official car and five domestic staff upon retirement from the Nigeria Immigration Service. The retired comptrollers argue that despite their qualifications and the agreements reached, the defendants have neglected to provide the entitled benefits, which they claim amounts to N15 million.

They are requesting the court to declare their entitlements and compel the defendants to fulfill their obligations. The case is set to be heard by Justice Rakiya Haastrup, with the next hearing scheduled for June 23.
