Appeal Court Upholds Reinstatement of 455 Retired Officers

On March 16, 2026, the Appeal Court dismissed an appeal filed by the Police Service Commission challenging a judgment from the National Industrial Court that nullified the retirement of 455 senior police officers. The ruling, delivered by a three-member panel including Justices Okorowo, Banjoko, and Abang, affirmed the lower court's decision made on September 30, 2025, which described the forced retirements as illegal.

The court ordered the immediate reinstatement of the affected officers, alongside the payment of their salaries. The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, was restrained from taking further action regarding the retired officers.

The controversy arose after the Police Service Commission, led by ACP Chinedu Ambros Emengaha, retired these officers on January 31, 2025, sparking criticism over the legality of the retirements. Stakeholders expressed optimism that the current Inspector General and Police Service Commission will comply with the court's ruling without delay.
