Imo Sachet Water Producers Suspend Production Amid Costs

Sachet water producers in Imo State have halted production for three days amid concerns over rising costs, particularly the price of nylon used for packaging. The Association of Table Water Producers (ATWAP) in Imo State initiated the shutdown on Monday, which has disrupted supply and affected residents in Owerri and its surroundings.

Residents have complained about the scarcity and rising prices, with sachet water previously sold at 350 Naira now going for 500 Naira. Retail hawkers typically sold three sachets for 100 Naira, but this has increased.

A member of ATWAP, speaking anonymously, linked the price hike to rising costs of nylon and diesel, exacerbated by ongoing conflicts in Iran. Bismark Lumanz, the state chairman of ATWAP, denied that the shutdown was a strike, insisting it was routine maintenance to ensure clean water production.

He confirmed that business supply would resume on Thursday, October 12, and that prices have been adjusted temporarily.
