Water Producers Demand Legislation Against Illegal Production

The Association of Table Water Producers in Nigeria, represented by Dr. Clementina Chinwe Ativi, is calling for stronger legislation to combat illegal water production, which poses significant public health risks. During a national convention held in Kano, Ativi emphasized the importance of collaboration with government regulatory agencies, including the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), to ensure that table water production, including sachet water, adheres to high safety standards.

She identified illegal production as a major challenge, noting that some operators use counterfeit registration numbers and operate outside regulatory oversight. Ativi stressed the need for routine monitoring and compliance to safeguard public health.

The convention marked a new chapter for the association, which represents table water producers across 36 states and aims to provide quality and affordable water to the Nigerian population.
