Sanwo-Olu Critiques Opposition's Fuel Subsidy Promises

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu dismissed the promise by opposition politicians, particularly former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, to restore fuel subsidy if elected in 2027, calling it empty campaign rhetoric. Speaking at the 7th Freedom Online Newspaper Lecture in Lagos, Sanwo-Olu argued that such commitments are neither fiscally realistic nor sustainable.

He emphasized that the removal of the subsidy was a difficult but necessary decision to prevent the depletion of public finances, as it had become an unsustainable drain on the country’s resources. Sanwo-Olu noted that the subsidy was originally intended as a temporary measure but had failed to benefit ordinary motorists.

He acknowledged the removal's painful effects on Lagosians but asserted that the reform's benefits would emerge over time. The lecture was chaired by former Minister Lai Mohammed, with Senator Gbenga Daniel as the Special Guest of Honour.

Sanwo-Olu stated that the savings from subsidy removal have improved revenues for states and local governments.
