FG Establishes Safe Schools Department for Enhanced Security

The Federal Government of Nigeria has upgraded the Safe Schools Initiative by creating a dedicated Safe Schools Department within the Federal Ministry of Education. This new department will provide strategic leadership, coordination, and oversight of school safety programs nationwide.

The announcement was made during an interactive session with the Senate Ad-hoc Committee on the Safe Schools Initiative, which reviewed the program's implementation and the use of appropriated funds. Dr.

Tunji Alausa, the Minister of Education, stated that this restructuring replaces the former Safe Schools Financing Unit from the Federal Ministry of Finance and reflects the Ministry's constitutional responsibility for education policy. The initiative will now operate under a unified national framework, ensuring every school benefits from the program.

The ministry will collaborate with various security agencies to develop comprehensive safety measures, which include physical security enhancements and improved infrastructure. Accountability for funds, including international grants, was also addressed, with a commitment to transparency in resource management.
