Security Increased in Osun After NURTW Leader Murder

Security measures have been significantly increased at motor parks across Osun State, especially in Osogbo, due to concerns over potential reprisals following the murder of Oyeyemi Olalekan, also known as “Emir.” Olalekan was shot dead shortly after being appointed the state chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) by government representatives. Eyewitness Gbadegesin, vice-chairman of the Osun NURTW, stated that the murder occurred after a meeting with the Commissioner for Transportation, Ephraim Oyedele, who had urged union elders to support Olalekan.

The attack took place at Mayfair Park in Ile-Ife, where Olalekan and others were dining. Eyewitness Kareem Akeem identified the attackers, including Nurudeen Alowonle, head of the recently dissolved executive, and claimed they fled the scene in Alowonle's vehicle.

Alowonle denied involvement, asserting he was in Osogbo during the incident. The Osun State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Zungura, confirmed that an investigation is underway and warned against retaliatory violence.
