Senate Approves N2.285 Trillion FCT Budget for 2026

On Thursday, the Nigerian Senate approved a N2.285 trillion budget for the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) for the 2026 fiscal year, an increase of N84 billion from the previously submitted N2.201 trillion by President Bola Tinubu in March. The budget will cover expenditures from January 1 to December 31, 2026.

Despite broad support, concerns were raised regarding the lack of a comprehensive revenue profile accompanying the spending proposal, which could expose the territory to unregulated borrowing and rising debt obligations. Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the budget's passage, following a report from the Senate Committee on FCT, chaired by Austin Akobondu.

The budget allocates N165.775 billion for personnel costs, N378.231 billion for overhead expenditures, and N1.741 trillion for capital projects. Senators, including Adetokunbo Abiru and Sani Musa, emphasized the need for clarity on revenue sources to avoid future borrowing without adequate legislative oversight.

Akpabio agreed to ensure the FCTA submits a revenue profile.
