Senate Considers Ban on Campaigns Amid Insecurity Crisis

During a plenary session on Wednesday, the Nigerian Senate discussed the possibility of suspending political activities in eight states due to worsening insecurity. Lawmaker Abdul Ningi raised concerns about the increasing threat of attacks in regions such as Borno, Plateau, Bauchi, Benue, Sokoto, Kebbi, and Kano.

He emphasized that the situation requires immediate and serious attention, stating that the federal government cannot continue to operate as if insecurity does not affect them. The motion, sponsored by Tahir Monguno and supported by other lawmakers including Ali Ndume and Kaka Lawan, highlighted the need for urgent intervention, especially following reports of 400 civilians abducted in Borno State.

Monguno warned that renewed attacks pose a serious risk to national stability and security. The Senate condemned recent attacks and called for a review of military operations to identify gaps in strategy and compliance with humanitarian standards.
