Nigerian Senate Rejects Bill to Establish National Ethnic Commission

The Nigerian Senate rejected a bill sponsored by Senator Anthony Ani to establish the National Ethnic Reconciliation Commission (NERC) aimed at managing ethnic conflicts and promoting national unity. Senators Eyinnaya Abaribe and Adam Oshiomhole opposed the bill citing redundancy, as the acronym NERC was already in use by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio emphasized that the bill was unnecessary and would impose additional financial burdens on the government. Despite initial support, the sentiment shifted, leading to a resounding vote against the bill.
