Williams Sisters Fall to Chan and Joint at US Open Doubles

Serena and Venus Williams faced a dramatic defeat in their return to the US Open women’s doubles on Friday at Arthur Ashe Stadium, losing to Chan Hao-ching and Maya Joint with a score of 6-3, 6-7 (6/8), 7-6 (10/7). The Williams sisters, who have won 14 Grand Slam doubles titles together, including two US Open crowns, were competing in their first major doubles match since the 2022 US Open.

After losing the opening set, they fought back in the second set, hitting 20 winners to level the match. However, despite taking a commanding 5-0 lead in the deciding 10-point tie-break, they could not secure the victory as Chan and Joint mounted a remarkable comeback.

Serena, aged 44, was making her first appearance at the US Open since returning to Grand Slam singles at Wimbledon, where she lost to Joint. Joint expressed the significance of the match, stating, “The atmosphere was surreal,” highlighting the honor of playing against such tennis legends.
