Mike Dean Defends Refereeing Career Amid Backlash

Mike Dean, a former Premier League referee, has defended his officiating career following criticism over comments made on the "Jamie Vardy’s Having a Party" podcast. Dean, 61, revealed that he and other officials engaged in "secret games," such as seeing how long they could go without blowing their whistle during matches.

He mentioned instances where he went 20 to 25 minutes without stopping play and challenged himself to remain in the center circle for as long as possible. These comments sparked backlash from fans, prompting Dean to clarify his stance on social media.

He emphasized that throughout his 25 years as a professional referee, he applied the Laws of the Game to the best of his ability and aimed to allow the game to flow. Dean officiated 553 Premier League matches from 2000 to 2022 and served as a video assistant referee during the 2022/23 season before retiring from officiating in 2023.
