SGF Urges Catholics to Implement Social Teachings in Nigeria

Georg Akum, representing the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Dr. Ezeamama Chidiebera, called on Catholics to apply the principles of Catholic social teaching to address Nigeria's social, economic, and political challenges.

This appeal was made during the 2026 Laity Week flag-off ceremony held in Abuja, themed around the application of Catholic social teaching in contemporary Nigeria. Akum highlighted the unique role of the Catholic laity in bridging the church and society, emphasizing that faith should influence public life rather than remain a private conviction.

He noted Nigeria's ongoing struggles with economic pressures and social inequities, asserting that the principles of Catholic social teaching could serve as a moral compass for individuals and communities. Additionally, Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, represented by Declan Emelumba, discussed the state's commitment to welfare and infrastructure development, including the construction of 130 roads and investments in electricity to boost economic activity.
