Shari’ah Council Denies Organizing Prayer for INEC Chairman's Removal

The Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria, represented by its Secretary General Nafiu Baba Ahmad, has publicly rejected claims that it organized a prayer call for the removal of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu. This clarification was made on a Monday in Kaduna, following reports that suggested the council had issued directives for Muslims to pray for Yakubu's removal.

The council described these claims as false and lacking any official backing, emphasizing that it had not authorized any such prayer initiative. It urged the public to ignore the misleading information circulating on social media, which it believes is an attempt to involve religious bodies in political disputes and create confusion.

The council reiterated its earlier stance that while it has concerns about the fair conduct of elections, it does not support actions that could compromise its neutrality, especially in a country with diverse religious and ethnic groups.
