Shettima Calls on New ECOWAS Leadership to Cement Regional Unity

Vice President Kashim Shettima has challenged the newly appointed leadership of the ECOWAS Commission to make regional cohesion and economic integration a core priority. The message came during a meeting in New York between Shettima and Generale Birame Diop (retired), the organization's incoming president, held on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly.

According to Shettima, achieving deeper West African integration requires deliberate efforts to strengthen relationships between member states and craft programmes that deliver tangible benefits to ordinary citizens across the bloc. He underscored the role private businesses must play in supporting cross-border regional projects, positioning the commercial sector as a partner in the integration agenda rather than a passive observer.

The encounter reflects Nigeria's continued investment in shaping ECOWAS direction at a time when the 16-member bloc faces internal pressures, including recent military coups in member states and security challenges. By engaging directly with the new commission leadership, Nigeria is signalling its expectation that the regional body will focus on practical cooperation that strengthens economies and improves living standards.
