Shettima Affirms Nigeria's Commitment to WTO in India

On September 13, Vice President Kashim Shettima reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) during a meeting with WTO Director-General Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala in New Delhi, India. This meeting took place on the sidelines of the BRICS Leaders’ Summit.

Shettima stated that no nation could achieve sustainable prosperity in isolation and assured continued support for the WTO’s efforts to strengthen multilateralism and promote international cooperation. He articulated the interconnectedness of countries and the necessity of collaboration for sustainable economic development.

Shettima also discussed the role of migration as a significant driver of development, innovation, and economic growth, noting that migrants have historically contributed to the development of nations and cities. He highlighted the contributions of the Nigerian diaspora in education, entrepreneurship, and professional excellence, referencing a Pew Research Centre analysis of 2024 US Census Bureau data on Nigerian-born Black immigrants in the United States.
