Nigeria Supports WTO and Multilateralism at BRICS Summit

At the BRICS Leaders’ Summit in New Delhi, India, on Saturday, Vice President Kashim Shettima reaffirmed Nigeria's commitment to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and the multilateral trading system. He stated that no country can prosper in isolation and emphasized the need for a global system based on cooperation.

During his meeting with WTO Director-General Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Shettima highlighted migration as a key driver of development and innovation, noting that immigrants have historically contributed to nation-building. He cited a Pew Research Center analysis indicating that 67% of Nigerian-born Black immigrants in the U.S. hold at least a bachelor’s degree, the highest among major Black immigrant groups.

Shettima praised Dr. Okonjo-Iweala for her leadership at the WTO and encouraged her to continue her contributions to global development. Dr. Okonjo-Iweala is the first woman and first African to head the WTO, having begun her second four-year term in September 2025.
