Shettima Advocates for UN Reforms at General Assembly

Vice President Kashim Shettima returned to Nigeria on September 25 after leading Nigeria’s delegation to the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, United States, from September 20. He was mandated by President Bola Tinubu to represent him at this annual global gathering.

During the General Debate, Shettima delivered Tinubu’s national statement, where Nigeria called for reforms to the United Nations Security Council, advocating for permanent African representation, fairer global financing, stronger climate support, and deeper multilateral cooperation. At the Third High-Level Roundtable of the Africa Minerals Strategy Group, Tinubu emphasized the need for African countries to focus on processing and value addition rather than merely exporting raw minerals.

Additionally, at a high-level education financing event co-hosted by Nigeria and Italy, Shettima reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to education and supported the Global Partnership for Education’s $5 billion financing campaign. He also engaged with Nigerians in the Diaspora and held meetings with the new leadership of the Economic Community of West African States Commission and UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed.
