Shettima Advocates for Conflict Resolution at AU Summit

Vice President Kashim Shettima returned to Abuja following his representation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the African Union Summit in Angola. During the summit, Nigeria emphasized the need for stronger African-led mechanisms for conflict prevention and resolution, alongside urgent actions against xenophobic and Afrophobic attacks on Africans in South Africa.

Nigeria supported the Luanda Action Plan and called for sustainable financing of Africa’s peace and security architecture, urging greater collective responsibility among African Union member states and enhanced African ownership of conflict resolution solutions. Shettima's absence raised concerns domestically, particularly as critics noted President Tinubu was on a three-week vacation in Europe at the same time.

Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, National Chairman of the Peoples Redemption Party, criticized the situation, questioning the leadership of Nigeria with both the president and vice president out of the country.
