NSPCL to Begin Controlled Water Release from Shiroro Dam

North South Power Company Ltd. (NSPCL), the operator of Shiroro Hydroelectric Power Plant (SHPP), announced plans to commence controlled water release from Shiroro Dam in the last week of September. This decision, communicated in a public safety notice signed by Alhaji Suleiman Abubakar, General Manager, Plant Services, on behalf of Mr. Ugochukwu Chioke, Chief Operating Officer, NSPCL, is intended to ensure safe management of the hydropower facility during the rainy season.

The release may increase water discharge downstream, potentially raising water levels along affected sections of the river channel. NSPCL advised residents of riverine communities, farmers, fishermen, and boat operators to exercise caution and avoid restricted areas.

A five-step safety process has been initiated, including distributing Early Warning Letters to stakeholders and conducting flood sensitization workshops. NSPCL will sound a siren for one hour to alert communities before the release, which will be gradual to consider those living downstream.

Access to restricted areas will be strictly controlled during this operation.
