Kachia Community Faces Darkness Despite Gurara Dam Presence

Dr Manzo Maigari, the Chairman of Kachia Local Government Area in Kaduna State, expressed concerns regarding the lack of electricity and potable water in communities hosting the Gurara Dam. Speaking at a North Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (NHYPPADEC) stakeholders’ meeting, he highlighted the injustice of the dam supplying water to the Federal Capital Territory while local communities suffer.

Maigari noted that the dam has contributed to increased insecurity, displacement, and the collapse of farming activities in Kachia and neighboring Kagarko Local Government Area. He estimated that between 150,000 and 200,000 people have been displaced in Kachia, many of whom are now in overcrowded internally displaced persons’ camps.

He urged NHYPPADEC to work with the Federal Ministry of Water Resources to ensure that host communities receive electricity and potable water before the refurbished Gurara hydroelectric plant begins full power evacuation to the national grid. NHYPPADEC Managing Director, Abdulrazaq Sadig Yelwa, reaffirmed the commission's commitment to addressing these challenges.
