Shoprite Nigeria shifts focus to neighbourhood stores

Shoprite Nigeria is shifting its retail strategy by planning to open standalone neighbourhood stores, moving away from its traditional reliance on large shopping malls. Adekunle Adebiyi, Executive Director of Investments at MBO Capital Management Limited, shared this information during an interview on Nairametrics’ Drinks and Mics.
The company has faced financial challenges, leading to the temporary shutdown of operations for negotiations with suppliers. Three Shoprite stores have since reopened.
Adebiyi noted that the new strategy aligns with the original business plan and will allow the company to focus on retail without significant capital investment in property development. Shoprite's financial difficulties are attributed to foreign exchange volatility, with 17 of its 28 stores having dollar-denominated rental agreements, which increased costs due to naira depreciation.
Additionally, operational issues, including inventory management weaknesses and the loss of access to the former parent company’s enterprise resource planning system, have compounded these challenges. The company has not disclosed the number of planned neighbourhood outlets or their locations.
