Six Scavengers Face Trial for Vandalism in Edo State

Six scavengers are set to face trial in Edo State for allegedly vandalizing state-owned infrastructure, including Fabiyi Akpata Primary School in Benin City. The Edo State government announced this development in a statement on Wednesday, highlighting a 21-day ultimatum for scavengers residing along Lago Street to vacate the area.

Eugen Okolois, the chairman of the Edo State Public Property Protection Committee, stated that the government will no longer tolerate any form of vandalism of public property. The six suspects are currently in police custody and will be charged in court on Monday.

Okolois emphasized that the destruction of public assets will not be tolerated, urging scavengers to find proper accommodation. Alhaji Abba Garuba, chairman of the Scrap Dealer Association of Edo State, noted that measures are being implemented to regulate the activities of scrap dealers, including work hours from 7 AM to 7 PM, with operations outside these hours deemed illegal.
