Protests Erupt in South Africa Over 'Igbo King' Installation

Protests erupted in South Africa, specifically in the Eastern Cape, against the installation of Solomon Ogbonna Eziko as an 'Igbo king' on March 24, 2026. South Africans deemed this act an affront to local traditions and sovereignty, leading to violent demonstrations where vehicles allegedly belonging to foreigners were burned.

The Nigerian High Commission, represented by Ambassador Temitop Ajayi, responded by emphasizing Nigeria's respect for South African laws and expressing regret over the unrest.
