Igbo Leader Solomon Ezekiel Apologizes for Kingship Claim

Solomon Ezekiel, an Igbo leader in South Africa, issued an apology on Saturday for claiming kingship, which he clarified was a misunderstanding that led to violence and property destruction following a controversial coronation event on March 14, 2026, in East London. The event triggered outrage among local residents and resulted in protests that escalated into violence, including the destruction of at least 13 vehicles.

The South African government condemned the coronation, labeling it a violation of customary protocol. Ezekiel expressed deep regret for the confusion and emphasized that he does not claim to be a king but rather a recognized elder.

The Nigerian embassy in Pretoria distanced itself from the incident, describing it as a cultural misunderstanding. Additionally, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide announced plans to abolish the conferment of titles outside Igbo land, with President General Azuta Mbata stating that any such awards would be deemed illegitimate.
