South Korea and Iran Discuss Strait of Hormuz Security

On a recent phone call, South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi discussed the security situation in the Strait of Hormuz. This conversation occurred at Tehran's request and comes after South Korea confirmed it is weighing a potential military contribution to the waterway's security.

The Strait of Hormuz is vital for global oil supplies, carrying about a fifth of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas exports. The dialogue follows warnings from Tehran that any South Korean military involvement could lead to "serious consequences." South Korea has sent a fact-finding team to assess the situation but has not yet decided on deploying military forces to the region.

The situation in the strait has been severely impacted since the US-Iran conflict escalated on February 28, leading to disruptions in global energy markets. Negotiations between Iran and the United States regarding control over the strait have stalled.
