Lee Jae Myung Proposes Talks to End Korean War

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung proposed initiating talks with North Korea to formally conclude the Korean War, which has remained unresolved since the 1950-53 conflict ended with an armistice. Lee made this proposal during a speech commemorating Korea's liberation from Japanese colonial rule.

He urged both Koreas to cease mutual threats and engage in discussions, which could also address measures to curb North Korea's nuclear capabilities. This proposal follows North Korea's denunciation of upcoming US-South Korean military drills and its recent missile tests in response to Japan's military enhancements.

Since taking office in June 2025, Lee has shifted from a hawkish stance to a more conciliatory approach towards North Korea, offering talks without preconditions. Meanwhile, North Korea has strengthened its military ties with Russia, reportedly receiving support in exchange for military assistance in the Ukraine conflict.

The US maintains approximately 28,500 troops in South Korea to counter threats from North Korea, with Colonel Ryan Donald noting that North Korea's military actions have altered the threat landscape for US forces.
