Laia Lopez leads Spain to U-20 Women’s World Cup victory

Spain triumphed over defending champions DPR Korea 4-3 on penalties to win the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Łódź, Poland, after a goalless draw. Spain goalkeeper Laia Lopez emerged as the hero, saving penalties from Choe Yon-A and Pak Il-Sim.

The match was tightly contested, with neither team scoring during regulation or extra time. Lopez had previously made a crucial save in the first half against Ho Kyong.

Spain increased their attacking pressure in the second half, with Pau Comendador forcing a diving save from DPR Korea's goalkeeper Pak Ju-Gyong. The victory secured Spain's second U-20 Women’s World Cup title, following their 2022 win in Costa Rica.

Coach David Aznar expressed pride in his players, stating the title completed a "beautiful cycle." Defender Silvia Cristobal shared the joy of achieving a childhood dream. Despite the loss, DPR Korea coach Han Chol-Hak praised his players' efforts, noting their historic achievement of not conceding a goal throughout the tournament.
