Spain Unveils €5 Billion Package to Combat War Impact

On Friday, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced a comprehensive economic package worth €5 billion (approximately $5.8 billion) aimed at cushioning the economic fallout from the ongoing Middle East war. This package includes 80 measures designed to shield households and key sectors from soaring costs due to the extraordinary situation.

Key components of the package, which will take effect on Saturday following publication in the official gazette, include a significant reduction in energy-related taxes. Specifically, the government plans to cut the value-added tax on fuel, which is expected to lower pump prices by €0.30 per liter, roughly translating to a €20 reduction per average car tank.

Additionally, the government will slash electricity taxes by 60 percent and suspend product taxes, reducing the value-added tax on electricity from 21 percent to 10 percent. Other support measures include direct subsidies of €0.20 per liter for transport operators, farmers, ranchers, and fishermen, as well as a temporary nationwide rent freeze, pending parliamentary approval.
