Gas Flaring Devastates Akwa Ibom Oil Communities

Gas flaring in Akwa Ibom's oil communities, particularly in Ikot Ebekpo, has turned the area into a furnace, severely affecting residents' quality of life. Edward Georg, a local resident, reported that the flare has caused sleepless nights since it began in early January, with temperatures rising and vibrations shaking homes.

The flare, located just 118 meters from houses, has led to health issues such as heat rashes and respiratory problems among children. Fisherman Franci Ekanem noted that the water has been contaminated, affecting fish populations and local livelihoods.

The flaring is linked to the Utap field, owned by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and Sterling Oil, which has faced criticism for its operations. Despite the field's estimated reserves of 330 million barrels of oil and 3.5 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, local communities suffer from the environmental and health impacts of gas flaring.

The situation has raised concerns about the legality of operations and the need for urgent intervention.
