Community Strategy to Boost Health Insurance in Anambra

Health stakeholders in Anambra State have implemented a community-driven strategy to enhance health insurance enrolment for women of child-bearing age. This initiative was established during a multi-stakeholder roundtable organized under the Strengthening Public Accountability for Results and Knowledge (SPARK 2) project, supported by the International Budget Partnership (IBP).

Participants, including government agencies, civil society organizations, and traditional institutions, recognized the need for collaboration to improve healthcare access. They resolved to mobilize residents for National Identification Number (NIN) registration and subsequent enrolment into the Anambra State Health Insurance Agency (ASHIA).

Dr. Obiageli Uchebo, Permanent Secretary of the Anambra State Ministry of Health, identified the NIN requirement as a significant barrier to enrolment.

Benedict Okolo from JDPC emphasized the need for practical recommendations to enhance maternal and child healthcare. Ugochi Ehiahuruike from SIDEC expressed optimism about the partnership's potential to increase enrolment among women of reproductive age.

The project also aims to strengthen accountability in primary healthcare financing and improve referrals from traditional birth attendants.
