Nigerian Railway Corporation Advocates Transport Integration

At the 2026 Transport Industry Summit organized by the Transportation Correspondents Association of Nigeria, stakeholders in Nigeria's transportation sector called for a stronger integration of road, rail, water, and air transport to enhance economic growth. Dr Kayode Opeifa, Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, emphasized that transportation should be viewed as a key driver of productivity and national competitiveness.

He advocated for a transport system where different modes complement each other, highlighting the role of rail in moving large volumes of passengers and freight efficiently. Opeifa noted that the NRC is focusing on expanding freight operations and improving connections with seaports and industrial centers.

He also called for increased private-sector participation and protection of railway infrastructure. Engineer Sarat Braimah, representing the National Inland Waterways Authority, pointed out the potential of Nigeria's waterways for cargo movement and urged compliance with safety regulations.

The authority called for private investment in various aspects of inland water transportation.
