Super Falcons Face Racist Abuse Before WAFCON 2026

Nigeria’s Super Falcons have been subjected to racist abuse on social media ahead of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. Several players, including Esther Okoronkwo, Rasheedat Ajibade, Asisat Oshoala, Halimatu Ayinde, and Joy Omewa, were targeted with monkey and banana emojis following allegations of cash theft from their rooms at the Marriott Hotel in Casablanca.

Okoronkwo claimed she lost about $700, prompting a wave of abusive comments on social media, believed to be from Moroccan users. Nigerian journalist Colin Udoh reported that a suspect has been arrested in connection with the theft and has confessed, with full restitution promised to the players.

This incident follows a previous case involving Rinsola Babajide, who faced racial abuse after criticizing a CAF decision regarding the Africa Cup of Nations. The Super Falcons are in Morocco to defend their title, seeking a record-extending continental championship.
