Kano State's Political Violence Threatens Peace Ahead of 2027

Kano State has retained its status as one of the most peaceful states in the North-west geopolitical zone, even amidst political volatility and threats from rival thuggery groups. The state has not experienced the severe insurgency and armed banditry affecting other North-west states.

Despite the emirship tussle between the state government-recognized Emir of Kano, Khalifa Muhammad Sanusi II, and the dethroned HRH Aminu Ado Bayero, peace has been maintained. The Kano Civil Society Alliance for Peaceful Politics, led by Ambassador Abdullahi D.

Mohammed, expressed concern over the rise in political violence and armed youth gangs, attributing this to politicians who allegedly fund these groups. In response to the threat posed by these gangs, the state government granted amnesty and rehabilitation to over 1,300 repentant thugs in 2025.

The emergence of new violent groups in Kano poses a significant risk to the state's stability and, by extension, to Nigeria's overall peace.
