Sweden's 2026 Election: Impact on Israel-Palestine Policy

Sweden will hold a general election on September 13, 2026, which may significantly impact its foreign policy concerning the Israel-Palestine conflict. A Novus survey indicates the left-wing coalition has 50.3% support compared to 47.9% for the current right-wing government led by Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson of the Moderates.

Sweden has historically played a notable role in the conflict, being the first EU member to recognize Palestine in 2014. The current government does not view Israel's actions in Gaza as genocide and has suspended and later ended funding to UNRWA, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees.

In contrast, the left-wing bloc, including the Social Democrats, the Left Party, and the Greens, supports resuming UNRWA funding and joining the International Court of Justice's genocide case against Israel. The Sweden Democrats, led by Jimmie Akesson, advocate for revoking recognition of Palestine and relocating the Swedish embassy to Jerusalem.
