Sweden Increases Citizenship Residency Requirement to 8 Years

Sweden has approved a significant reform to its citizenship framework, raising the minimum residency requirement for foreign nationals from five years to eight years, effective June 6, 2026. This change is part of a broader effort to modernize Sweden's citizenship system and strengthen integration standards.

The new rule will apply to new applicants and pending cases not yet decided, meaning eligibility will depend on the decision date rather than the application submission date. Additionally, applicants will need to demonstrate financial self-sufficiency, showing stable income and proof of not relying on state welfare benefits.

The reform also introduces a mandatory language and civic test, with the first phase of rollout beginning in 2027, requiring applicants to demonstrate basic Swedish reading and listening skills, as well as knowledge of civic society structures. While the overall process will be tightened, children will be able to apply for Swedish citizenship independently without relying on their parents' applications.
