SWIS Africa Launches Hub to Empower Women in STEM

Shaping African Women in STEM (SWIS Africa) has launched the SWIS Hub, a year-long digital innovation and mentorship initiative designed to bridge the gender gap in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) across Nigeria. The initiative will commence with its first Pop-Up Innovation Lab in Lagos on August 7 and 8, 2026, where young women will receive hands-on training in artificial intelligence and data science.

Funded through the AU-EU Youth Action Lab Innovation Grant, the project aims to equip participants with practical digital skills and connect them with mentors, scholarships, and career opportunities. SWIS Africa, founded by Nigerian academics Samuel Ogunsola and Abosede Salami, plans to organize four innovation labs across Nigeria, focusing on various STEM fields.

The initiative also includes a six-month Media Fellowship for 20 young women in science communication and the establishment of 10 STEM Circles for peer learning. The project, running from May 2026 to April 2027, is expected to impact over 500 young women.
