TCN Clarifies N1.28bn Solar Streetlight Project Funding

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) issued a clarification regarding the N1.28 billion solar streetlight projects executed between May and June 2025, stating that these projects were not funded by TCN's resources. This clarification followed a media report alleging that TCN spent the funds outside its statutory mandate.

TCN, through a statement signed by General Manager, Public Affairs, Mrs Ndidi Mbah, explained that the projects were included in its capital projects by the National Assembly, which designated TCN as the implementing agency. The funds utilized were Federal Government appropriations approved by the President, processed through the Government Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS) in compliance with financial regulations.

TCN emphasized that while its core mandate is bulk power transmission, it is empowered to execute projects assigned by the National Assembly, provided due process is followed. The projects aimed to enhance security and visibility in vulnerable communities and protect national power infrastructure.
