TCN Reports Delay in Amuwo Substation Rehab Due to Equipment

The rehabilitation of the Amuwo 132/33kV Transmission Substation in Lagos is currently delayed as it awaits equipment being manufactured in China. Engr. Mrs Funmi Ikoko, Acting General Manager of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), reported that the project is approximately 80% complete, but contractors are waiting for critical components such as contactors and relays.

This delay follows an earlier setback related to outage permissions required for the rehabilitation work. The project necessitated a total shutdown of the Amuwo station, which TCN could not grant without ensuring alternative electricity supply arrangements.

TCN deployed mobile transformers and extended lines from Ojo and other locations to alleviate some load issues. The Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission (LASERC) team, led by CEO Mrs Temitope George, expressed concerns regarding the capacity of Lagos' electricity network to manage available power, emphasizing the need for upgrades in distribution networks alongside transmission improvements.

The rehabilitation project is expected to increase the substation's capacity by an additional 60MVA upon completion.
